Growing through Grief: Understanding and Supporting Bereaved Youth
Grief is a universal human experience, yet an extremely personal journey. When it comes to children, what does grief look like and how do we best support a child who is grieving? Is there an unhealthy way to grieve? Do children grieve in the same way as adults? Utilizing a light hearted, interactive approach, this workshop will explore how children and adolescents grieve, as well as how mental health clinicians can best support youth who have experienced bereavement. The workshop will also include an opportunity to explore the “cost of caring” (i.e. compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, etc.) and strategies to promote resilience for mental health professionals.
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe theoretical frameworks for assisting bereaved youth.
2. Identify bereavement-informed best practices for supporting youth who have experienced loss.
3. Define ways in which working with bereaved clients may impact the clinician both negatively (i.e. vicarious trauma/grief, compassion fatigue, burnout) and positively (i.e. compassion satisfaction, vicarious resilience).
4. Explore strategies for increasing clinician resilience and mitigating negative impacts of the work as a helping professional.
