Undergraduate Scholarship Recipients
Alexandria Flores
Alexandria Flores is in her final year at University of Houston-Downton studying social work. Alexandria is a first generation college student and will be completing her final practicum in the fall at Service, Teaching, Aging, Research (STAR) Lab. She expects to graduate in December 2023 and plans to continue her education and obtain a Master's Degree in Nonprofit Management. After graduation, Alexandria hopes to work in a nonprofit organization supporting supporting the overall well-being of children and young adults, providing them with resources, events, and support to help with the strain of their behavioral health.
Shamorrow Miller
Shamorrow Miller will be graduating this December with her Bachelor of Social Work from The University of Houston-Downtown. She'll be the first person in her family to earn a bachelors degree and she wants to continue on to pursue her masters. She'll be completing her internship at The Alliance. Shamorrow would like to be a social worker who values her clients and her work. Her goal is to make a difference in the lives of others and change society for the better.
Loren Jones
Loren Jones is a student at University of Houston-Downtown and studying Social Work. Their anticipated graduation date is May 2024 and they'll be completing field placement at The Council on Recovery. Believe it or not, Loren used to be a pet groomer, before deciding to pursue behavioral health as their education and career path. Upon graduation, Loren will apply to the Graduate College of Social Work at The University of Houston. They hope to one day become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and run their own private practice to work with those who are neurodiverse, those who struggle with eating disorders and substance use, and the LBGTQIA+ community.
Betty Ascencion
Betty Ascencion is in her final year of her Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Houston-Downtown. She is completing her internship this year at the University of Houston-Downtown and will be graduating in May 2024. She is currently employed at AVANCE-Houston and hopes to put into practice everything she's learned with her social work degree. With some experience under her belt, Betty hopes to one day obtain her master's degree in social work, earn her licensure, and open up her own private practice to provide counseling services to youth and young adults.
Graduate Scholarship Recipients
Alexia Frometa
Alexia Frometa is currently a dual degree student obtaining her Master's in Social Work and Public Health at The University of Houston. She is completing her internship at UT Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System (HEROES). Alexia would like to focus her career on adolescents because she believes they are bright forces that are still figuring themselves out and, with some support, understanding and encouragement, they will change the world. In the future, she would like to work for an organization or practice that focuses on queer, anti-capitalist, and decolonized practices.
Danielle Gillespie
Danielle Gillespie in her final year and is seeking a dual-degree with Master's in Social Work and Public Health at The University of Houston. She's completing her final internship at The Menninger Clinic. After obtaining her MSW and MPH degrees, her goal is to enter the Houston workforce and work with youth dealing with dual diagnoses. She plans to advocate for more accessible mental health care for children and adolescents. Through her advocacy efforts, informed by her experiences in clinical social work, she aims to contribute to positive changes in mental health policy and the delivery of mental health services.
Anahi Miranda Mendoza
Anahi Miranda Mendoza is in her final year at the University of Houston pursuing her Master's of Social Work. Anahi completed a generalist practicum placement at Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) and will be completing an advanced, clinical placement at Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital starting Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. Anahi is a DACA recipient and is particularly interested in working with Latinx communities. Her future goals after her May 2024 graduation include obtaining licensure and open up a private practice and advocate to increase access to mental health services and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
Joseph Fincher
Joseph Fincher is currently attending Texas Southern University in their master's level Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Joseph earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English - Creative Writing and a minor in Psychology in 2009, at the age of 31, from the University of North Texas. After serving 9 years as an educator, he began his graduate students in Counseling Education to better serve his community. His internship placement is with Inner Peace Counseling. Joseph intends to serve individuals who receive major medical diagnoses (i.e., cancer, HIV, Parkinson's, etc.) as they process through the accompanying grief of such a diagnosis. Joseph also plans to pursue his doctoral studies at one of the Houston area universities.
Christy Barrera
Christy Barrera is pursuing her Master's of Social Work degree from Baylor University. Her anticipated graduation date is August 2024 and her practicum placement is at Ethos Wellness. Christy received a major medical diagnosis and through her treatment, decided that she wanted to devote the rest of her life to social work. She has a desire to walk with others through the pain of life, and help them identify ways to cope and flourish. She plans on joining the workforce after graduation and her ultimate goal is to effect positive change and growth int he lives of the individuals she is able to serve.
