Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative
In the wake of the national reckoning on race that began in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and other Black men at the hands of police, NBHP members discussed the negative and traumatic impacts of racism, discrimination, and isolation on an individual’s behavioral health. As improving client/patient overall health and well-being is a core component of each member organization’s mission, the chief executives agreed to work to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in their respective organizations.
NBHP began taking steps in this area by hiring a consultant to facilitate a DEI series for NBHP member organization chief executives and other executive staff. - Recruiting Board members that reflect the diversity of the greater Houston area and/or the populations served by the organization; and
- Reviewing and restructuring organizational client/patient policies to ensure no explicit or implicit discriminatory policies against marginalized communities exist.
