Presentation Overview: A review of selected literature is presented relevant to personality and personality disorder. Specific assessment tool recommendations for the assessment of personality and personality disorder are discussed. The assessment and diagnosis of borderline personality disorder will be specifically stressed. Additionally, contemporary debates covered during the presentation include categorical versus dimensional classification of personality disorder; gender and age biases; and, to a minor extent, treatment debates.
About the Presenter: Joel L. Carr, Ph.D., LCSW, LPC is the Director of Quality Improvement at The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD located in Houston, Texas. Dr. Carr holds a clinical M.S.W. from Louisiana State University, a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas with concentrations in social psychology and criminology/deviant behavior, and a second Ph.D. from Capella University with a specialization in educational/developmental psychology.

- Understand the relationship between general personality and personality disorder.
- Understand the epidemiological nature of BPD, and various etiological hypotheses of BPD.
- Understand the clinical utility of collecting assessment data from multiple sources when assessing personality and personality disorder.
- Gain specific recommendations concerning assessment, diagnostic, and to a minor extent, treatment strategies for BPD.
