The Time is Now: Integrating Co-Occurring Mental Health & Substance Use Disorders Treatment
The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that about half of those who experience a substance use disorder will experience a mental illness during their lives and vice versa. Despite this well-established link between these conditions, many treatment providers cannot or do not address substance use and mental health together, which leads to increased costs, duplication of services, and – most importantly – poorer outcomes overall. Please join us for this important discussion about how behavioral health providers can create more effective systems of care for people with co-occurring conditions.
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Understand and explain to others the history of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
2. Realize and explain to others why co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders have historically been diagnosed separately.
3. Recognize the impact of several statistics on how co-occurring disorders are to be the expectation, and no longer the exception.
4. Become aware of initiatives coming forth on co-occurring disorders, including resources for participants.
