"Advocating for Refugees: A Psychiatrist's Journey with Refugees"
Join NBHP as we host the incredible Dr. Sophia Banu, M.D. for an engaging presentation. This presentation will explain a bit about the refugee population as well as the process of qualification status and resettlement for refugees. Refugees experience unique mental health issues due to the nature of their experiences. Participants will learn about refugees, gain cultural competency skills around this population, and debunk some common myths and misconceptions about refugees. The main take away for the presentation will be learning about the refugee population and better understanding how to provide mental health services, as well as build relationships with, this population.

- Identify common mental health problems that are prevalent in refugee populations: Case examples
- Misconceptions and Myths about Refugees

- Understand the importance of fostering relationships with refugee communities, support services, and local businesses when engaging the refugee community and designing interventions, such as health fairs, mental health education classes etc.
